Athena Activities and Meetings
Athena members are involved in myriad activities. No matter what we
do, we want to have fun!

Activities
Athena meets monthly. Sometimes we've had gatherings at the the
Centreville Library on St Germain near Newgate Shopping Center in
Centreville, VA or the Chantilly Library on Stringfellow Road in
Chantilly, VA. However, most of our gatherings are in private homes,
which is why we as people to RSVP. It's a lot easier to schedule a home than a library these days.
Directions to the libraries are available.
The best thing to do is to join the announcements list, or once you become a member of
Athena, you will be automatically added to our membership email
list. That will provide more accurate information about gatherings
than this site since things can change quickly.

Year-Round Activities
The USS Athena has several activities that occur year-round. Most of
these consist of collecting items for various charities. Members are
encouraged to bring these items in whenever we have a meeting. We
also will mark a particular drive on the calendar as further
incentive.
- Collection of the following items for our various charities:
individual use toiletry items, school supplies,
shower caps, new toys, new and used
educational and children's/young adult books.
Beneficiaries include Embry Rucker Homeless Shelter, Fairfax
County Family Services (foster kids), Burn Center in
Baltimore, Western Fairfax Christian Ministries (kids books
and food), Toys for Tots, Our Neighbor's Child, Fairfax
Hospital Education Center
-
We have several informally arranged crafting gatherings
through the year to prepare for the December craft fair (and
if we don't do a craft fair in a particular year, we can
always stock up on items for the next one!). Participants do
not need to be crafters and there are things to do for people
of all levels.
-
Members who wish to pursue other charity work are encouraged
to do so. Some people give intact shopping bags to Clock
Tower Thrift Shop (benefits NVA family services), new clothes
to foster kids, books for libraries, food for the animal
shelters, money to various charities including animal
shelters, breast cancer awareness, etc.
-
We operate on the principle that in order to achieve the
vision of a world without hunger or want as depicted in Star
Trek, we better start fixing up this planet now.

Part of the philosophy of Star Trek is to improve the world around
us. Athena members are involved in a variety of community service
activities including providing person-power for area charity races,
raising money for public broadcasting, writing trivia
quizzes for community fund-raisers, and raising money for various
charities.
Some of our recent projects:
- Annual sales of craft goods and auctions at area conventions
bring in approximately $500-$600 annual for our main charity: Julien Fleming Memorial Fund.
The fund began in 2001 after fundraising efforts finished paying for
Julien Fleming's funeral expenses and remaining bills ($6000 was
raised between his death on 11/29/2000 and 8/2001). In addition,
through the generosity of the science fiction community, an additional
$2000 was raised to begin the Julien Fleming Memorial Fund. The first
recipient family received a $500 grant in December of that year.
-
Annual Craft Shows at typically raise about $200 for our
charities. Charities supported include the Julien Fleming Memorial Fund, Challenger Center,
and the Shifflett family. The fundraising done in 2001 for the
Shifflett family brought in closer to $500.
Kim Shifflett (17 years old in 2001)
is a member at Centreville United Methodist Church and suffered a
life-threatening allergic reaction that left her in a vegetative
state. Expenses for her care (things not normally covered by
insurance) were mounting. With charity funds being diverted to
September 11 efforts, smaller charities like this were forgotten and
we attempted to fill the void.
- Office Supplies were given to HART, a non-profit, no-kill animal
adoption agency in the area. So much of their money was spent on pet
food and vet bills for the animals in their care that they couldn't
even buy pens!
- Helping out Fairfax Hospital's Education
Center with collecting items to get them started.
- Raised $4900 for the Julien
Fleming Fund during the summer of
1999 through auctioning items at Shore Leave, Dominion staged
kidnappings, and other unusual ways of fundraising. Total fundraising
for the year for Julien was $6000.
- Toys for
Tots drive in conjunction with Star Trek Insurrection
movie promotional and the Star Trek Nemesis movie promotional.
-
Bat'leh auction: a crewmember made a carved wooden bat'leh which
was auctioned by Robert O'Reilly (a.k.a. Gowron) at Farpoint (11/14)
and went for $205. Half of the proceeds went to the Julien Fleming Fund and the other
half went to
Farpoint's charities.
-
Wilma Duckling Charity Raffle:
a duck dressed as Wilma Dearing, autographed by Erin Gray
(a.k.a. Wilma Dearing on Buck Rogers) was raffled on 9/15/98 and won by
Blair Learn. $211 was raised and split between
to the Julien Fleming Fund and the Challenger Center.
Check out our duck page for
details.
- Relay for Life, May 30-31, 1998 at Potomac Falls High School. We
raised over $1500 for the American Cancer Society and attempted to
assimilate the campgrounds. Pictures!!
- Raising money for various charities (Challenger Center, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation,
TWA Flight 800
funds,
selling Entertainment books and
selling craft items.
- Raising money for the Julien
Fleming Fund,
including working at a
benefit show to help raise money for the child's medical
expenses. This is a major, ongoing part of our community service.
- Drives to collect school supplies and clothes for children in
Fairfax and Prince William counties who need them. This is another
ongoing part of our community service.
- Drives to collect canned goods and individual use toiletries for
area food kitchens and homeless shelters. We continue this work to
this day.
- In the past, we supported the "Overseas Coupon Project"
which helped our servicemen and servicewomen overseas make ends meet
by providing them with manufacturer coupons that they could use at the
on-base commissary.
In 1997, we donated $16,000 in
coupons. In 1998, we sent $13,792.54 and in 1999, we sent over $20,500
in coupons to our
adopted Navy base in Atsugi, Japan. We no longer participate in this
project.
- Helping out and donating items for auction at conventions that
have raised money for Make a Wish (Shore Leave), Easter Seals
(Novacon), and Habitat for Humanity (SciFi Dreamin').
- Promoting reading by giving away books (when we can!!) and helping
the local library with events such as Centreville's Murder Mystery
activity.
- Star Trek: First
Contact promotional at Centreville Multiplex on Route 28 on
November 23, 1996. And we have pictures!!
- UPN Channel 20 July 4 Parade (2 years in a row). 1997 parade pictures.
- MDA Telethon Labor Day Weekend 1995--1997.
