USS Athena Special Projects

The USS Athena primarily supports local charities. These tend to be smaller charities that do not have the means or the infrastructure to publicize their needs to a wide audience. By supporting them, we also make a difference close to home.

The Julien Fleming Memorial Fund

For the past several years, the crew of the USS Athena has worked hard to raise funds for the Julien Fleming Fund.   Julien passed away in November 2000.  Even though we have raised enough funds to pay for his remaining medical care and funeral expenses,we wish to keep his memory alive.

With the permission of Julien's family, we are working to establish the Julien Fleming Memorial Fund.  The purpose of this fund is to keep Julien's memory alive and to continue making a difference in our little corner ofthe world.  Future fundraising proceeds will be used to pay medicalbills for other gravely ill children whose treatment costs go beyond theirfamilies' ability to pay.  In this way, the memory of this beautifulchild will continue, as it becomes the means of helping others who travelthe same rough road.

We ask that you continue to support this effort as you have in the past as we try to make the world a little brighter, one child at a time.

Fairfax Hospital Education Center Project

Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. Since that hospital is nationally known and is supported by a number of organizations, we decided to find out if there was something more local.

Fairfax Hospital (about 30 miles from Children's Hospital) is in the process of establishing an education center for their Hospital for Children.

In the short term, they need new items that they can give to children such as

These items are typically given to children as a reward for making it through the latest round of treatments or as a prize for games. Remember, items need to be new because many of these children have depressed immune systems.

They are also looking for educational materials such as new books, science posters, etc. Athena has contacted Inge Heyer of the Space Telescope Science Institute to supply information about space and the Hubble Telescope.

Other Stuff

Info on the Studley Memorial Fund:
One member did lose a dear friend as part of the 9/11/01 terrorist attack and a memorial fund has been set up to help the family. This person left a wife who is 3.5 months pregnant and a 2 year old little girl behind. Contributions can be sent to the STUDLY MEMORIAL FUND, c/o Julien J. Studley, Inc., 300 Park Avenue, 3rd Floor, NY, NY 10022.

Keep in mind that the blood supply is running low again. Blood only lasts for 42 days and many of the victims require blood a lot longer than that. Inova Blood donor Services requests that you call to make an appointment to give blood.

Also, please do not forget the other local charities that need your help! Many people donated to the September 11th funds, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, this diverted funds away from other charities such as local food banks.
